Don’t Tolerate Trump

When I went to Washington D.C. for the Women’s March last January with my daughter, granddaughter and partner, I never thought we citizens would tolerate a President who has consistently displayed nothing but arrogant, erratic, belligerent and vengeful behavior.

What is it going to take for Congress to invoke the 25th Amendment to protect us from his reckless taunts to Kim Jong Un to deploy the nuclear button:

“Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is much bigger and more powerful one than his, and my Button works!”

This is the bullying language of a 6-year-old boy! We are becoming so used to Trump’s outrageous behavior and language that we are becoming numb. A collective amnesia is settling in. We must think that surely someone will stop him from blowing up the world. That someone who must stop him is us.

It seems to me that the psychiatric community is shirking its duty by stating that a person cannot be diagnosed from a distance. It does not take a medical degree to assess the fact that Trump has a narcissistic personality disorder. His actions demonstrate his grandiosity, entitlement and desperation for attention. He is an ignorant racist, a sexual predator, incurious, untrustworthy, a liar, and an embarrassment. Our allies cannot understand how we continue to tolerate his behavior.

Psychiatrists don’t want the responsibility to name Trump as incompetent and unfit to be President. They keep waiting for a political verdict, but as we wait for a political verdict, we see more and more Republicans fall under his spell. They, too, cannot separate fact from fiction. When Trump says, “I didn’t call African nations and Haiti shithole countries, Senators such as Cotton and Purdue, nod their heads and say, “I didn’t hear that word either.” We’re watching the silencing of American democracy. It is the responsibility of all of us to stand up to Trump and Trumpism.

  1. Maureen,
It doesn’t seem possible that we must endure his insulting behavior, lack of integrity and complete ignorance of national and foreign affairs. The only affairs he is familiar with are ones with the likes of Stormy the porn star. And his base not only tolerates him but applauds him. I wish Mueller would hurry his investigation along.

  2. Dr. Bandy X. Lee, of Yale has, along with something like 50 other psychiatrists also contributing, published “The dangerous Case of Donald Trump” asserting that Trump is psychotic . She now suggests, in an interview with Dana Milbank, that Trump’s Dr. and others around him who parrot his hyperbolic assertions of “excellence” in all matters including health, in the face of obvious poor health habits like 4-5 hours of sleep, no exercise, high cholesterol , and fast food habits, suffer from “shared psychosis” when they are around him. Like Orrin Hatch who suggests Trumps presidency rivals Lincoln’s; and Sen Cotton and Perdue, and Kirstjen Nielsen,, and others who sing his praises and deny hearing him say what he clearly said and are willingly lying to protect him.

  3. Well said Maureen. We can keep informing our elected officials in Congress about our revulsion and anger with this President. He certainly has not intimidated the news media, and we should show our support for their continued efforts to hold him and his supporters in Congress accountable by subscribing and writing to them.

  4. Excelente texto Maureen!

  5. So well said Maureen–somehow we need to emerge from amnesia and the inability to do anything–it is like we are a numb and disbelieving and seem sure that something will change–but it never does. Thanks for writing this.

  6. Concise, focused, directly stated s d disturbing. “The best lack conviction. While the worst are full of passionate intensity. “ I have reflected, but I haven’t turned it to action. Shame on me.

  7. Thank you for your suggestion about Emily’s list. I will follow up on that.
Keep up the good work, Maureen!

  8. I share your outrage and frustration. What is happening to my country? I marched last January and I’ll march again this weekend, but beyond that…? I wrote a letter to the editor that was published, and just this morning, I was thinking I need to do that more. Sometimes I think the only thing that will help is if we are all out on the streets demanding impeachment. Are there very many people who support him? I fear the majority is in the middle, hoping and wishing. Thank you for going on record as a mental health professional.

  9. Maureen, Thank you for your clearly stated message. Having survived, barely, fascist bigotry and hatred in Amsterdam during WWII, it gives me the shivers to hear not just the racist words coming out of our President’s mouth, but the support he is being given by his spineless Republican toadies. However, we are still living in a democracy and we can fight them with our voting power. My question is: How do we encourage young people to start running for political office and get out to vote? Sometimes I feel that we among our friends and colleagues are preaching to the choir. So grateful that you are opening a conversation. Thank you again for being an inspiration.

    1. Thank you for your comment Hendrika. I know that EMILY’s List is reaching out to young women to train them to become candidates. One way might be giving a young person who you know a membership in EMILY’s List so they can start to become informed in what is involved in getting into politics.

  10. As a U.S. citizen, I affirm your assessment and stand solidly for impeachment of Trump. The majority of the GOP Congress exercise no discernment and simply affirm Tump’s petulant actions,. The recent support of Democrats to increase surveillance powers falls within this concern as well.

  11. Maureen, THANK YOU for your clear message. We need a cultural shift in how we think about politics! I would appreciate seeing some concrete things we can do. I certainly support our CA senators and our local representatives. I plan to march on the 20th with family and friends. This is not enough. I appreciate the conversation you are opening here.
